How to choose a tree service company in New Jersey
Asbury Park Tree Service · Updated
Anyone can buy a chainsaw and a truck. That’s the problem with hiring a tree service: the difference between a good crew and a bad one usually doesn’t show up until something goes wrong.
Here’s what to check before you hire anyone, including us.
1. A New Jersey tree care license
New Jersey requires tree care businesses to be licensed. Ask for the license number, and make sure it’s on the estimate or the company’s website.
2. Insurance, in writing
Tree work is dangerous, and accidents happen even to good crews. Ask for a certificate of insurance showing liability coverage, and workers’ compensation if they have employees. If a company can’t show you proof, move on.
3. A written estimate that spells everything out
A good estimate tells you exactly what you’re paying for:
- Which trees or branches are being removed
- Whether cleanup and hauling are included
- Whether the stump is included, or priced separately
- What happens to the wood (hauled away, left as firewood, chipped)
Vague estimates are how surprise charges happen.
4. Real reviews
Check their Google reviews. Look for reviews that mention specific things, like the price, the cleanup, or how the crew treated the yard. A handful of detailed reviews tells you more than a pile of 1-line ones.
5. Honest recommendations
A good tree company tells you when you don’t need something. If a tree can be saved with pruning, they should say so, even though removal is the bigger job.
Be wary of anyone who pushes you to take down healthy trees, recommends “topping” a tree (chopping the top off), or pressures you to sign on the spot.
6. Watch out for storm chasers
After big storms, out-of-town crews sometimes go door to door offering cheap, fast cleanup. Some are fine. Many aren’t licensed or insured for New Jersey. Stick with a local company you can actually call back.

Here’s what a couple of our customers had to say:
“They were by far the most reasonable price and were able to schedule us within 3 days of the estimate. The cleanup was immaculate. It was like they were never there.”
Emma D.
“They arrived on time and conducted a thorough assessment of both our front and back yards, identifying no issues apart from the tree I initially pointed out. They didn’t try to upsell any unnecessary services, which I greatly appreciated.”
Doug J.

FAQs
Does a tree service company need a license in New Jersey?
Yes. New Jersey requires tree care businesses to be licensed. Ask for the license number before hiring anyone.
How do I know if a tree company is insured?
Ask for a certificate of insurance. A legitimate company will send it without any hesitation.
Should I get more than one estimate?
For a big job, it’s a good idea. Just make sure you’re comparing the same scope, including cleanup and stump work.
Is the cheapest tree service the best choice?
Not always. A low price can mean no insurance, no license, or cleanup that isn’t included. Compare what’s actually in the estimate.
